An additional 20 hotels will be given Green Key certifications from the Qatar Green Building Council (QGBC) as the country’s hospitality sector continues to embrace green efforts ahead of this year’s FIFA World Cup.
QGBC launched Qatar’s Green Key certification programme last year to create a culture of environmentally friendly practices in hotels.
According to a news report, QGBC Director, Eng Meshal Al Shamari said that it was a requirement for hotels vying for the certifications to have energy efficient electric, lighting and air conditioning systems, proper ventilation, and a plan for the education of employees and visitors when it comes to green efforts.
The certification is being implemented in partnership with Qatar Tourism – the ministry body that is playing a key role in raising awareness around the Green Key certification.
According to QGBC, the Green Key Certificate is an international initiative that provides a sustainability framework for several sectors, including the hospitality industry. QGBC leads the initiative in Qatar, providing hotels with guidelines and checklists to implement greener practices.
QGBC provides hotels with step-by-step guidance criteria to make the process of implementing green practices straightforward. The process can be done in-house whereby hotels are able to comply with the green criteria in a cost-effective manner.
