CityscapeWIRE recently featured Shireen, a leading advocate for inclusive urban development, in a thought-provoking discussion on the challenges and opportunities facing cities today. With a focus on technology, inequality, and sustainability, Shireen shared valuable insights gleaned from her experience as the former chief innovation officer for the city of San Jose.

In a segment of the conversation, Teneshia posed a question about the challenges cities are facing, to which Shireen responded, highlighting growing inequality and inadequate infrastructure as pressing issues globally. She emphasized the pivotal role of local government in driving economic outcomes and fostering social cohesion in urban environments.

Teneshia Naidoo: What are some of the greatest challenges that cities are currently facing? And how is technology helping bridge those gaps?

Shireen Santosham: I think certainly in the US, and globally, is the growing inequality, lack of social mobility, that is driven by a combination of factors. But some of it is around lack of adequate infrastructure in cities - not so great transportation systems and educational systems.

The conversation also delved into the green transition in cities, with Teneshia asking about the pace of this transition. Shireen discussed the importance of inclusive approaches to sustainability and the challenges of balancing environmental concerns with socioeconomic considerations.

TN: Are you seeing it happen though, at a faster pace, that transition, the green transition, or are we still lagging?

SS: These things go in waves. So I think it accelerates really quickly and there's a lot of excitement. And then the reality of how hard some of these things are takes the edge off and then it accelerates again.

Shireen's insights offer valuable perspectives on the complexities of urban development and the importance of fostering inclusivity and sustainability in city planning, highlighting the vital role women play in driving positive change in cities around the world.

The conversation delved into the critical role of technology in improving access to social services for marginalized communities and the importance of reducing administrative burdens to ensure equitable resource distribution. Shireen emphasized the need for trust-building in technology to bridge the digital divide and empower underserved neighbourhoods.

Addressing broader challenges, Shireen highlighted growing inequality and inadequate infrastructure as pressing issues facing cities globally. In the context of real estate and the built environment, she underscored the pivotal role of local government in driving economic outcomes and fostering social cohesion in urban environments.

Drawing from her experience in San Jose, Shireen shared insights into initiatives aimed at bridging the digital divide and expanding internet access to marginalized communities. By partnering with telecom companies, the city successfully deployed networks in underserved neighborhoods, providing connectivity to thousands of residents.

The conversation also delved into the green transition in cities, emphasizing the importance of inclusive approaches to sustainability in the built environment and real estate sector. Shireen stressed the need for government incentives and thoughtful program design to ensure that renewable energy and electric vehicles are accessible to all residents.

Highlighting the role of technology in fostering civic engagement and social cohesion, Shireen discussed initiatives aimed at empowering communities and promoting peer-to-peer support. Platforms like Nextdoor play a pivotal role in building stronger, more connected neighborhoods.

In a rapid-fire question segment, Shireen reflected on the characteristics of an inclusive city, the challenges of urban development, her role model, and career advice she values. Her insights shed light on the complexities of urban development and the importance of fostering inclusivity and sustainability in city planning.
